The power elite have us right where they want us — divided and irrelevant!
The major parties are big because they are inclusive: people with differing views work together toward a common goal. For example, the Republican Party has the religious right, social conservatives, fiscal conservatives, NeoCons, etc.
The minor parties are small because they are exclusive, rejecting any whose views are not “pure” enough. Unless they can get 100% agreement, they refuse to cooperate. If we are to break the two-party monopoly, we must work together.
Here's a quiz. Which political party has the following stances?
Answer: Two separate “third” parties plus one faction within the Republican Party!
Circle chart: Shows the relative overlap in stances between various parties.
The Libertarian Party has been around for 37 years. They run more candidates and have more officials in office than all other third parties combined. This election success is almost exclusively at low levels, and mostly in non-partisan races. No third party is successful at the federal level. The LP has been losing ground in recent years and is currently in fifth place, with about 234,000 registered voters across the country. Most Libertarians are atheists and believe that individual rights derive from ethics and human nature.
The Constitution Party has been around for 16 years, and is currently in 3rd place with about 320,000 registered voters. The Constitution Party platform is heavily focused on Christianity, believing that human rights derive from God. While they disagree on the source, they are in 90% agreement with the Libertarians about the actual rights themselves.
While Ron Paul has been a Republican in Congress for decades, the Ron Paul r3volution recently exploded into existence in slightly over a year. He received 1.2 million votes in the 2008 presidential primaries, and his recently-formed Campaign for Liberty organization went from 0 to over 100,000 members in less than 3 months. With 12,000 attendees his September, 2008 Rally for the Republic may be the largest gathering of hardcore, pro-liberty activists in modern history. Ron Paul's stances are halfway between the Libertarian and Constitution Parties, which means he's in 95% agreement with both groups.
These three groups should merge to form a new, inclusive "Liberty Party", and we should unite behind a Paul/Barr ticket.
Ron Paul and Bob Barr have both served in Congress, bringing credibility to the ticket. The Constitutionalists will be delighted because both are pro-Constitution and pro-life. The Libertarians will be delighted, as both men have run for president on the Libertarian ticket.
Libertarians and Constitutionalists, imagine doubling the size of your party, and then adding tens of thousands of enthusiastic activists and more than a million supporters. We can continue to fight alone and get nowhere, or we can merge together and actually make a difference.
First, tell everyone you know who is interested in liberty. Get them to visit this site and contribute to its content. Then tell the leaders of the three organizations. Once they have heard it from a few thousand people, they will start to listen.
Let's take our freedom back!
